Vattenfall Selects Rolls-Royce SMR as Supplier for New Nuclear Power in Sweden
By Dominic Chopping
STOCKHOLM--Swedish state-owned energy company Vattenfall said that Videberg Kraft, the nuclear power company that it owns with Industrikraft, has selected Rolls-Royce as the supplier for new small modular reactors in Sweden.
The British company has been chosen to supply three of the reactors on the Varo Peninsula, next to the existing Ringhals nuclear power plant.
Vattenfall said the process of evaluating and selecting a final supplier, from over 70 options initially, has been under way for four years.
"We are now taking a major step forward together with Industrikraft and Videberg Kraft AB on the journey towards new nuclear power in Sweden, for the first time in more than 40 years," said Anna Borg, board member of Videberg Kraft and chief executive of Vattenfall.
"New nuclear power is an important part of the Swedish energy system and will support the transition of industry and thereby strengthen Sweden's long-term competitiveness."
Vattenfall said Rolls-Royce SMR offers an efficient, industrialized concept that reduces the risk of delays, and is based on proven pressurized water reactor technology--the same type of technology used at Ringhals.
