Fidelity's high-performance investment culture merits a Parent rating upgrade to High from Above Average.
The firm has displayed its advantages in recent years. Its fund lineup, supported by extensive fundamental research, has proved to be durable and soundly constructed. Recent Morningstar Medalist Rating downgrades have been more often the result of the actual or pending retirements of exceptional long-tenured managers rather than any fundamental problems. Fidelity has handled those transitions thoughtfully, making greater use of comanagers and teams than in the past while drawing on its deep analyst bench.
Strong fundowner results corroborate these improvements. Most of Fidelity's assets sit in funds with Morningstar Ratings of 4 or 5 stars, and little money is in poorly rated funds. Its fixed-income division is outstanding, its target-date and asset-allocation capabilities enjoy ample resources, and many of its huge equity funds continue to impress despite their size. An extended bull market has helped; many Fidelity equity funds thrive in such environments. A rising market doesn't explain all their success, though; security selection has been strong, too. Fidelity has also adapted, expanding into exchange-traded funds, collective investment trusts, managed accounts, private credit, and systematic investing.
The firm has its blemishes, including a sprawling fund lineup, some questionable investment strategy launches, looser capacity management than certain peers, and unclear succession plans for CEO Abby Johnson.
These concerns, however, don't outweigh Fidelity's broad organizational strengths. It remains competitively well-positioned, culturally ambitious, and unusually capable of developing and retaining investment talent. It is a top-tier firm.
