Cargill to Sell Nashville Dry Sausage Operations to Smithfield

Agribusiness giant Cargill has inked a deal to sell its dry sausage operations in Nashville, Tenn., to pork producer Smithfield Foods for an undisclosed amount.

Cargill on Thursday said roughly 160 employees at the plant, which produced pepperoni, will move to Smithfield upon completion of the sale, expected by the end of July.

Smithfield, which is owned by WH Group, China's top meat producer, said the deal adds production capacity of 50 million pounds a year and will supports its current portfolio of dry sausage brands, including Margherita, Carando and Armour.

Cargill said it will focus on the long-term growth and production of its cooked crumbles product line from plants in Nebraska and Texas.
