Signs of AMP's Earnings Recovery Now Clearer

AMP is focused on simplifying its business and reducing costs, with less emphasis on growth than historically. The advantages of AMP’s vertical integration have weakened, due to proactive regulatory scrutiny, expanding approved product lists, and more transparent product/fee disclosures.

Bulls Say, Bears Say

Bulls

AMP remains the second-largest advisor network in Australia and can leverage scale to offer its services at a relatively lower cost to customers.

Bears

Both the 2018 Royal Commission and bouts of turnover in AMP Capital since 2020 have materially reduced the competitive advantage of AMP’s brand and vertically integrated business model.

Company Profile

At its roots, AMP is a wealth manager, providing financial advice via Australia’s second-largest network of aligned financial advisors. It has a vertically integrated business model: AMP advisors can invest client funds into super funds and nonsuper investments manufactured by AMP through the firm’s own platforms, though advisors are free to recommend non-AMP products and third party platforms to their clients. The firm also has a small wealth presence in New Zealand with about 68 advisors. In addition, AMP also has a retail banking business focused on deposit taking and residential mortgages.
