Rheinmetall to Supply Japan With Autonomous Unmanned Ground Vehicles
By Mauro Orru
Rheinmetall secured a multi-million-dollar contract to provide autonomous unmanned ground vehicles to Japan.
The German arms maker said Monday that it had received the order from the Japanese Ministry of Defense, though it didn't disclose the exact value of the contract. Rheinmetall said it would deliver the unmanned ground vehicles, or UGVs, in partnership with Japan's Marubeni Aerospace as the prime contractor.
The so-called Rheinmetall Mission Master SP UGVs are expected to be delivered early next year for testing. The contract also includes long-term support, a training program and spare parts.
The vehicles can be towed or deployed by parachute to carry out missions in hard-to-reach terrain.
