Weekend Fire Extinguished at Marathon's Martinez Renewable Diesel Facility — OPIS
A Sunday fire that broke out at Marathon Petroleum Corp.'s renewable diesel production facility in Martinez, Calif., has been extinguished, according to a company spokesman.
"Marathon Petroleum responders extinguished a fire early Sunday morning at the company's Martinez renewable fuels facility. One employee was injured and transported to a medical facility. Fenceline air monitoring indicated no off-site impact," Jamal Kheiry, a company spokesman, said in an email statement.
Contra Costa Health, San Francisco Bay area's environmental agency, said early Sunday on social media that it issued public advisories for the surrounding areas of Martinez, Pacheco, Concord and Clyde, and that a CCH hazardous materials team was responding to the fire at the facility.
Shortly after, CCH said the fire at the renewable facility was under control and it lifted the public health advisories.
In early October, CCH also said it deployed a hazardous materials team to "investigate a reported release of petroleum coke dust" from the Martinez facility. At that time, CCH said the released began "while workers were conducting maintenance, which was stopped due to the release."
In late October, Marathon said in its earnings release that construction activities at the renewable facility are "progressing." In addition, pretreatment capabilities are increasing through the second half of 2023, and the facility is expected to produce 730 million gallons per year by the end of this year, it said.
The Martinez facility is a 50-50 joint venture between Marathon, the largest U.S. refinery operator, and Finland-based renewable diesel company Neste Oyj.
