Universal Music Renews Focus on Sustainability With New Team

By Mauro Orru

Universal Music Group established a new team with a focus on sustainability, part of structural changes to expedite the company's work on environment, community engagement, events and special projects.

The record label behind Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande said the new UMG Global Impact Team would be led by Susan Mazo, who was promoted to executive vice president and chief impact officer. The team will also include Dylan Siegler as senior vice president and head of sustainability, effective June 10.

Chief Executive Lucian Grainge said the new team would help ensure that functions like Siegler's and Mazo's aren't sidelined by others.

As part of its environmental commitments, Universal Music is seeking a 58% reduction in scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2032 when compared to 2019, according to the company's latest annual report. The group is also aiming to cut scope 3 emissions from waste generated in operations, business travel and other sources by 62% within the same timeframe.

Scope 1 and 2 emissions refer to emissions a company directly produces and those related to its power consumption, while scope 3 includes emissions linked to the use of the company's products.
