By Connor Hart

Walt Disney Co. has named Adam Smith as chief product and technology officer of its Disney Entertainment and ESPN divisions, effective Sept. 3.

In the role, Smith will be responsible for driving the technology strategy, development, deployment and continued innovation of the company's entertainment and sports-media businesses across various streaming platforms, networks and consumer touchpoints, the entertainment giant said Thursday.

He will oversee a global product and technology group, set to include engineers, product managers and designers, data scientists and technical operations teams.

Smith will jointly report to Disney Entertainment Co-Chairmen Alan Bergman and Dana Walden and ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro.

Smith most recently worked at YouTube, where he served as VP of product management. During his time with the company, Smith held executive roles across numerous divisions and played an integral role in building out its biggest consumer-facing products.
