Balfour Beatty Awarded GBP192 Million Contract in Scotland

By Anthony O. Goriainoff

Balfour Beatty said it has been awarded a 192 million pounds ($244 million) contract to build three new electrical substations in Scotland for SSEN Transmission.

The U.K. infrastructure company said Wednesday that it will design and build three new 275 kilovolt substations, which will strengthen and enhance the electrical transmission in the Argyll region.

Balfour Beatty said the new substations form part of SSEN Transmission's Argyll and Kintyre reinforcement strategy and will support the region's expected rise in renewable-energy production.

The company said that a minimum of 50% of its workforce for the project--estimated to be around 200 people--will be from the local and surrounding area, and that construction is due to start in late summer.

SSEN Transmission is SSE's electricity-distribution subsidiary in Scotland.

Balfour Beatty shares at 0733 GMT were down 2 pence, or 0.6% at 356.40 pence, with SSE up 1.50 pence, or 0.08%, at 1,801.50 pence.
