Bird-flu testing, vaccines and treatments: 5 -2-
The FDA and USDA have determined that, based on the information available now, the commercial milk supply is safe not only because of the pasteurization process, but also because of the diversion or destruction of milk from sick cows, the FDA official said. About 99% of the commercial milk supply comes from farms that follow the Grade A pasteurized-milk ordinance, which includes controls to ensure the safety of dairy products, the official said.
People with exposure to infected birds, livestock or other animals should use protective equipment such as N95 respirators, gloves, goggles and coveralls, according to the CDC.
If you have exposure to wild birds, poultry, cattle or other animals linked with H5N1, stay alert for signs of any illness, whether it's flu-like symptoms like cough, fever and body aches, or conjunctivitis - the eye inflammation that was the main symptom in two of the three U.S. dairy workers infected this year. People who have such animal exposure and develop any symptoms should get flu testing, the CDC says.
