Apple iPhone 7 owners still have time to claim up to $349 in class-action settlement

The deadline has been extended for certain iPhone owners to claim a settlement payout

The deadline for certain iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus owners to claim a cash payout from Apple has been extended to this Wednesday.

People who owned either of the two models at any point between Sept. 16, 2016, and Jan. 3, 2023, and who complained to Apple (AAPL) about their phone having audio issues are eligible to receive a payout in the class-action settlement.

If the iPhone owners paid Apple out of pocket for repairs or a replacement phone and Apple has a record of it, they are eligible to receive at least $50 and up to $349. If users only reported the issue to Apple but didn't pay the company for repairs or a replacement, they could receive a payment of up to $125.

The deadline to file a claim is now Wednesday, July 3, at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time (2:59 a.m. Eastern time on Thursday, July 4). That's an extension of the original deadline, which was June 3.

To file a claim, eligible iPhone owners need to have a notice ID and confirmation code from Apple, which Apple sent to eligible customers by email or postcard. Once the users have that information, they can register on the settlement website's payment portal to claim their money. Consumers can also find out if they are eligible by calling 1-833-633-0343.

The two iPhones affected by the settlement came out in 2016. Some users reported audio issues, such as not being able to hear calls clearly. Some of the phone owners filed a lawsuit against Apple, alleging that the issue had to do with the phones' audio IC chip and that the company had violated consumer-protection laws. Apple denied all allegations, but the two sides reached an agreement to avoid further costs.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MarketWatch.
